Set between the Grand Kremlin Palace and the Borovitsky Gate, the Armoury houses a staggering number of treasures that include the tsar's coronation robes, carriages, jewellery and armour. The history of the Armoury goes back to the fifteenth century, when it was a repository for the treasures and jewels of the grand princes of Moscow. It contained richly decorated arms, ceremonial robes, icons, gold and silver plate and ambassadorial gifts. The items in the Treasury Court were not only stored there, but also removed for use by the grand princes and tsars for official Russian ceremonies. It became a museum in the nineteenth century, following the Napoleonic invasion. A significant number of treasures from the collection were lost during this century which has no means reduced the splendour of the many items on view. Over 50 Fabergé eggs are on display in this wonderful collection. The Diamond Treasury is next door which contains the most valuable gems in Russia, including the 190-carat Orlov Diamond.
